Rochester Weekend, August 23, 24, 25

Join us for a summer weekend of C and B/C rides. We will ride the Cannon River Valley trail on Friday, explore trails in Rochester on Saturday, and ride the Douglas Trail to Pine Island on Sunday. There will be C and BC options.

You must be a TCBC member to participate in these rides. You are welcome for any or all days. Please register on the ride calendar no later than Wednesday, August 21, 2024.  Please register for each day that you will ride. Final details will be communicated to all riders on August 22 by email.

A room block has been arranged at the Fairfield Inn and Suites, 17th Ave NW, Rochester, MN 55901. (Fairfield Inn & Suites Rochester Mayo Clinic Area/Saint Mary’s) Call Marriott central reservations at 1-888-236-2427 to reserve a room or call the hotel directly at 507 258 7300.  Reference “Twin Cities Bike Club” when making a reservation. The rate for a Queen double is $119 plus tax. Breakfast is included. The room block will be released on July 23, so make reservations before then.

Rooms have a microwave, small refrigerator, coffee brewer and free wifi; a coffee bar is available all day in the guest lobby. Onsite laundry is available. Parking is free.

Friday  Welch to Red Wing

Two options from the Welch trailhead:

Ride the Cannon River Valley Trail into Red Wing- 24 miles round trip

(many lunch options, including: Veranda at St. James Hotel, 406 Main Street; the Bierstube, 233 Withers Harbor Drive; Perkins, 812 Withers Harbor Drive; Godfather’s Pizza, 2000 Old West Main Street)

or Welch to Red Wing with Hay Creek Extension – 33 miles roundtrip and lunch at Old West Saloon, 31655 MN Hwy 58

Please arrive by 9:45 a.m. at Welch Trailhead, 26674 144th Avenue Way, Welch.  We will leave promptly at 10:00 a.m.

A season wheel pass or a daily wheel pass is required. The trail is locally maintained rail-to- trail and all fees support maintenance. A daily pass is $7.25.


Saturday, 28 miles

The proposed route is subject to change (Cascade Lake to Mayowood – 28 miles)

Ride start:   Cascade Lake Park, 88 23rd Avenue SW, Rochester, 55902

Those staying at the Fairfield Inn will be able to bike to the ride start.  We will begin riding promptly at 10:00 a.m. We will be exploring the trails in Rochester. The ride leaders will have suggestions for the best places to stop for lunch.

Sunday, Rochester to Pine Island. 25 miles

We will bike on the Douglas Trail, northwest of Rochester, a rail-to-trail maintained by the DNR. We will meet at a trailhead just off Valleyhigh Road, a six minute drive from the Fairfield Inn.   [Please see the directions to get to the trailhead; the closest street address is that of the Mayo Clinic Marvin Building, across the street on the south side of Valleyhigh at: 2915 Valleyhigh Dr NW, Rochester, MN 55901.]   No fee is required to use the trail. Please be at the trailhead by 9:30 a.m., as we will leave at 9:45 a.m.

To drive from the motel to the Douglas trailhead (about 6 minutes)

  • Head northeast on 16th Ave NW toward Civic Center Dr NW .10 miles
  • Turn left at the 1st cross street onto Civic Center Dr NW .38 miles
  • Stay straight to go onto Highway 14/US Highway 14 W 21 miles
  • Then take the County Highway 22 and turn right onto Hwy 22  39 miles
  • Turn right onto Valleyhigh Road/County Hwy 4 and watch for Marvin Building on the right (2915 Valleyhigh Road NW)  .42 miles
  • The trailhead will be on your left opposite the Marvin building
  • Go slowly…hard to see parking lot on left

Restaurant choices are limited but we will find a place for lunch or a snack.  (Subway, Kwik Trip, and Island Market are near trailhead.)
