Paul Bunyan and Heartland Trails Weekend
July 26, 27, 28
These are all trail C rides.
Duane and Diane Kasper, who did this ride a few years ago, are handing it off to several of us. We’ll never replace them but hope to succeed them.
We will ride on the Paul Bunyan or Heartland Trails. You are welcome for one, two, or three days. There will be several ride leaders and many options. Faster riders are welcome to ride ahead. Trail information is at: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_trails/heartland/index.html
TCBC membership is required to participate in this ride.
Rooms are on hold until June 26 at the Walker Hotel in downtown Walker, at 907 Minnesota Avenue. Rooms are $118 for 2 beds and $100 for 1 bed, per night per room, plus tax; includes breakfast. When you call, at 218 547 2200, tell them you are with TCBC. (Note: Minnesota Avenue, highway 370 and highway 200 are all the same thing.)
Friday’s ride starts in Baxter at 11:30 a.m. at the Northland Arboretum trailhead of the Paul Bunyan Trail. Two routes are available: Baxter to Nisswa round trip, 33 miles or Baxter to Pequot Lakes round trip, 44 miles. Group dinner will be arranged that evening.
The usual fastest route from the Twin Cities is via Highway 371. Stay on 371 (not Business 371); go through the Hwy 210 intersection; at the next traffic light, just before Fleet Farm, turn right onto Excelsior Rd. for 0.5 miles (there’s a traffic circle along the way); turn left onto Conservation Drive. There should be signage for the Arboretum and Paul Bunyan Trail prior to the Conservation Drive intersection.
Saturday’s ride starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Guthrie Town Hall parking lot. We will bike the Paul Bunyan Trail to Bemidji and return for 30 miles; or continue to Bemidji State Park and a trail extension around Lake Bemidji for 44 miles round trip. We will have lunch suggestions and will arrange a group dinner.
Sunday’s ride starts at 9:45 a.m. in Akeley, about 10 miles southwest of Walker. We will bike to Dorset on the Heartland Trail and return for 24 miles round trip. To get to the start point in Akeley, go south on Highway 34 and turn right on Hillside Avenue for 0.1 miles. There’s an optional lunch stop in Dorset.
Please see the ride calendar for more specifics. Please notify one of the leaders that you will be joining us so we can send final details.
A heat index above 90 may alter our plans.
