Construction & other issues on Surly Urban Scramble
On July 31 there was a closure across one intersection of the University Transitway near the end of the route. To avert this continue on 4th St SE after the light rail station and turn left after a couple blocks to return to Surly.
Also, many riders prefer 55th St to the deteriorating 54th St to Lake Nokomis. To do so, start out on 54th crossing Hiawatha and the light rail tracks, turn left on 46th Ave, then right on 55th one block later. This goes through all the way to Woodlawn.
Thanks for all your feedback!
The Greenway has a closure from Girard to Bryant. The detour is well marked and takes you to 28th St, a bicycle boulevard with segregated lanes. It is fairly painless except for a small pile of construction gravel on Girard ride or walk over. Thanks to Johnny P for alerting us to this!
The Greenway was open again on Sunday, 8/23. I'm not sure if this is a weekend/weekday thing or more permanent. Just follow the cyclist detour signs if it closes again.
As of 9/20/20, much-needed repaving of East River Road has started affecting the area of this route. The options for dealing with this are as follows.
-The bicycle trail seems to be unaffected.
-The road MIGHT be passable if you don't mind riding on grooved pavement with a lot of saddle vibration. If active construction is in progress, you might need to switch to the trail.
-To avoid dealing with any of this, it is easy to switch to West River Road. Simply turn right on Marshall from Otis, cross the Lake St bridge and turn left at the next light. Resume the official route at Godfrey Parkway near the Minnehaha Falls/Veterans Home area.
