Big Rivers Trail Closures and Detours
It will be a while before we can enjoy the full length of the Big Rivers Trail again! -- in addition to the cleanup of the rock slide from last fall, there is a project to construct a new visitor center and parking lot at the Mendota Heights trailhead. Here is a page with info and a pdf of the detour map. They give the finishing date as December 2021. 😥 I'm sure it will be nice when done though!
The posted detour for the Big Rivers Trailhead was also closed on Wednesday May 26th. The detour that we ended up using was taking trail to Pilot Knob Road. Then right on Mendota Heights Road then left on Highway 13 to rejoin the trail just South of I494.
Below is an email that I sent to Dakota County Parks.
On Wednesday, May 26th I was riding with a group of friends from the Twin Cities Bicycling Club. We were riding South on the Big Rivers Trail and were planning on taking the detour around the Mendota Heights Trailhead that is marked on the detour map as Sibley Memorial Highway. https://www.co.dakota.mn.us/parks/Documents/BRRTDetourMap.pdf But the detour was also closed! There wasn’t’ any other detour signage provided. This forced us to search for another way around the construction area!
This situation is unacceptable and should be remedied as soon as possible by providing a safe and marked detour route for bicyclists and pedestrians.
This is the response that I got from Jenna Grim from the Dakota County Parks and the results are pictured below:
Hello Johnny Pugh
Thank you for the email. We would like to first apologize for your experience on the Big Rivers Regional Trail and understand your concerns. Having the main trailhead and detour closed should not have happened and we have followed up with the contractors for this project and have communicated the importance of keeping the detour open during the project to ensure a safe trail experience for all users. We have confirmed that the detour is now open.
Thank you again for reaching to the parks department and providing your concerns and feedback.
