Bike U Recap | Fit and Fitness
The stars were in alignment. A TCBC , Bike U, event was held on October 29, 2019 at Southdale Library, Edina, MN. The stock market did not crash and the weather was perfect. Two physical therapists, Dr. Brandon Busch and Dr. Lauren Loberg from the Tria Orthopaedic Center spoke to a packed room of TCBC members. The overarching topic was fitness. They led us through an overview of what it means to be fit and unfit, and what it takes to manage and maintain ongoing fitness. During the presentation as they engaged with the bicyclists and allowed time for their input and questions. TCBC members left with a greater understanding of the variables impacting their health and the possibilities for healing.
What did we learn?
- Injuries can be divided into sudden or unknown onset. Sudden injuries like falls tend to have a clear path to recovery. Unknown onset also called insidious, can feel less predictable. These insidious injuries are most often “overuse” injuries.
- Overuse injuries can be rehabilitated by increasing our body’s capacity to tolerate more.
- Healing an injury may involve utilizing a range of modalities, such as: medications, ice, heat, massage, acupuncture, and stretching however, these are short term strategies and should not be relied on as the only treatment.
- For long term results, your body needs to regain the capacity to tolerate more loads. Progressive and consistent strength training is a powerful way to improve your body’s capacity.
- Exercise is measured in quantity, frequency, duration intensity. Effective exercise starts at a tolerable level, gradually builds in load (difficulty) and is consistent.
- Last but not least, keep moving, try different ways to manage your self-care and have confidence in yourself and your ability to heal.
